The park
The Sierra de Guara is a mountain range located in the north of Aragón, between the influence of the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Its terrain, carved out by fast-flowing, crystal-clear rivers, has created one of the most distinctive landscapes in the Pre-Pyrenees: deep canyons, vertical cliffs and a network of rivers that runs through it from one end to the other.
The Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park has been awarded the Q for Tourism Quality, a mark of quality that certifies the standard of facilities and services for visitors.
The territory
In northern Spain, at the foot of the Pyrenees, the Sierra de Guara is a mountain system of over 80,000 hectares under the influence of a particular climate, between Atlantic and Mediterranean. Its orography, sculpted by an extensive river network of wild and crystal-clear waters, has created canyons, cliffs, and landscapes that visitors from all over the world explore throughout the year.
The value
Its mild climate, ecological potential, and ethnological and heritage richness have made the Sierra de Guara an emblematic place. A rugged-looking territory that is simultaneously a wildlife refuge, the European capital of canyoning, a world reference for sport climbing, and a guardian of cave paintings dating back to 22,000 BC.
Flora and fauna
The region’s diverse climate has given rise to a multitude of microenvironments within a few kilometres of one another, fostering remarkable biodiversity.
Birds of prey and birds
More than 150 species of birds have been recorded in the mountains, including the griffon vulture, the Egyptian vulture and the bearded vulture, an endangered species.
Vegetation
Riparian forests, Mediterranean scrub and high-altitude meadows alternate depending on the altitude and aspect, creating a diversity of vegetation characteristic of the Pre-Pyrenees.
Fauna
The area is home to a diverse range of wildlife that inhabits its ravines, forests and gorges, within an ecosystem that has remained largely untouched by human activity.
