The electric bike revolution

More and more people, both young and old, are opting to use e-bikes.

What is an electric bike?

Electric bikes are one of the most economical and least polluting motorised modes of transport on the market; they are fitted with a motor and a battery, and nowadays come in a wide range of power outputs and ranges.

Do you have to pedal on e-bikes?

This is a common question, just like the claim that you don’t get any exercise on an e-bike.

These bikes don’t work like a motorbike; you still have to pedal, and they simply help the cyclist pedal with less effort on steep hills, or cover more distance, which means that people who aren’t used to cycling can achieve their goals and keep up with their cycling friends who are more experienced.

Care and maintenance of an electric bike

If we want to extend the lifespan of all the components of an electric bike we need to take care of it and maintain it properly

To extend the lifespan of any electric bike, you should follow a few basic tips and ensure you keep up with the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.

This will save us from any nasty surprises or simply breaking down halfway through the journey.

Battery

Firstly, it is advisable to always use the manufacturer’s charger, as using a different one could damage the battery, meaning you would have to buy a new one, with the associated cost that this entails.

Another tip: before charging the battery, you should first check that it isn’t hot. After a ride, the battery tends to get warm, so you need to wait a little while. Once you’ve done that, connect the charger to your e-bike and then connect them to the mains; once they’ve finished charging, do the reverse. This reduces the likelihood of damaging both the battery connector and the motor connector due to any sparks that might occur.

If you are not going to use the battery for a long period, it is preferable to store it at half of charge.

Cleaning your electric bike

First of all, it’s best to avoid going out after it’s rained, when the trails are very muddy. Mud is your worst enemy, as it can damage many parts of your bike.

After every ride, you should clean, dry and lubricate your bike to ensure its parts last longer.

Do not clean with a high-pressure water jet as this could damage the motor or the battery

Wheel and brake maintenance

You should check your brake pads and discs and replace them when necessary to ensure safer driving.

You should check the spokes on the wheels, in case they’ve been damaged, and the tyres and their pressure should be checked before every ride.

One final tip: it’s a good idea to reinforce or cover certain parts of your bike that are subject to the most wear and tear, such as the chainstays, seat stays and forks.

Storing our e-bike

After asking at a shop, we were advised to store them horizontally, as this is better than hanging them vertically; that way, the shock absorbers aren’t put under as much strain and the batteries remain in their correct position.

E-bike routes in Bguara

Bguara is best known for offering routes suitable for all levels, but it’s worth remembering that the terrain is mountainous, so e-bikes are a good option for anyone who isn’t particularly fit but would like to enjoy cycling in a more ‘comfortable’ way.

So almost all the routes can be done on an e-bike, but you need to bear in mind the bike’s height, as otherwise you could damage the motor.
